What makes lecture audio different

The volume is the problem, not any single recording

Four courses at three hours a week is roughly 50 hours a semester. On a metered plan that is the binding constraint: Notta Pro allows 1,800 minutes a month, Otter Pro 1,200. LoroNote sets no plan cap, so the semester costs the same as one voice memo.

Teaching happens where the signal does not

Basements, labs, and older lecture theatres routinely have no usable data. Cloud transcription simply fails there. On-device transcription does not notice.

Sessions run long past a per-recording limit

A three-hour seminar exceeds the per-conversation ceiling on most cloud plans — 90 minutes on Otter Pro, 30 on its free tier. Length is not a variable in LoroNote’s pricing.

Every subject has its own vocabulary

Pharmacology, constitutional law, and organic chemistry each produce terms a general model mangles. Fix a term once in the custom dictionary and it comes out right in the next lecture.

You need it again in week eleven

A transcript you cannot find is not revision material. Folders per course and a calendar view that shows what you recorded on a given day are what make a semester of audio usable at exam time.

How a term of lectures goes through it

1 Start recording from your iPhone, or from the Apple Watch app if getting your phone out mid-lecture is awkward.
2 Transcription runs on the device after class — no upload, no queue, no connection needed.
3 File the recording into the folder for that course; the calendar view finds it later by the day it happened.
4 Revising: tap any line in the transcript and the audio replays from that exact moment, which is faster than scrubbing for the bit you missed.
5 On devices that support Apple Intelligence, draft a summary and pull out action items — also processed on the device.

Why on-device wins for coursework

Metered cloud plans price transcription per minute because every minute costs them server time. A student is the worst possible fit for that model: enormous volume, long sessions, and no budget. Running the model on hardware you already own removes the meter entirely — and it keeps working in the rooms where teaching actually happens, which are frequently the rooms with no signal.

What it will not do for you

Worth knowing before you rely on it:

It does not join online lectures. There is no bot for Zoom or Teams — a remote class has to be captured through the microphone or recorded some other way.
It does not translate. A lecture delivered in German transcribes in German.
Recording policy is your institution’s, not ours. Many universities require the lecturer’s permission, and some prohibit sharing recordings entirely. Ask first.
Accuracy tracks the room. A radio-mic feed transcribes far better than a phone on a desk twelve rows back.

Common questions

Can LoroNote transcribe a three-hour lecture?

Yes. No plan limits recording length or the number of recordings; the practical constraints are device storage and battery. At roughly 19x real time on an iPhone 15 Pro, three hours processes in about ten minutes.

Does it work in a lecture hall with no signal?

Yes. The Whisper Large V3 Turbo model runs on the device, so recording and transcription both work in airplane mode or with no reception at all. Nothing is queued for upload later.

Can I organise recordings by course?

Yes. Recordings go into folders with their own names, colours, and icons, and a calendar view shows what you recorded on a given day — which is how you find week four’s seminar during revision.

Am I allowed to record lectures?

That depends on your institution and, in some places, on local law. Many universities allow it for personal study with the lecturer’s permission and prohibit redistribution. LoroNote does not manage permissions; check your course or university policy first.
